Why Ammolite Glows: New Research Explains the Science Behind Its Rainbow Colours
A new 2025 scientific study shows that Ammolite’s vivid rainbow colours are created by nanoscale structure, not pigment. The fossilized shell preserves tiny aragonite layers separated by gaps only about 4 nanometers wide. These layers act like a natural light filter, reflecting precise wavelengths that appear red, green, or blue. For collectors, this means every brilliant Ammolite is not only a gemstone, but also a preserved optical structure from an ancient ammonite.
